The founder of a hackathon and startup event business called AngelHack, Greg Gopman, on his public Facebook feed this week said Uber’s latest round of funding and valuation was "ridiculous."
Which leads me to answer the question: why the f**k is everyone so excited about Uber?
People. It’s not about ridesharing.
It’s about Amazon being the everything store of the dotcom era. And Uber trying to become the every-service store of the mobile era.
My two cents?
Uber’s not just about helping people get cabs or expensive black sedans where there are few reliable ground transportation options…
It’s about ordering anything you might want, service-wise, through a slick and easy to use mobile app with little room for user errors. And starting with cars is genius — because cars (and trucks) and their drivers or dispatchers give Uber access to untethered infrastructure.
They won’t own the cars and hire the drivers always, but they’ll pipe demand to the “last mile.”
And that’s why Uber’s getting all this investor love. Plus, hey — great brand name and PR so far.
